Setelah menghiasi antarmuka sistem operasi Windows Vista sejak tahun 2006, tampilan ala "Aero" yang mengedepankan unsur-unsur grafis transparan tak akan dipakai lagi di Windows 8.

Windows 8 yang masih berada dalam fase pengembangan akan memakai gaya tampilan (User Interface atau UI) "Metro" yang lebih simpel, seperti pada perangkat-perangkat mobile dengan Windows Phone-nya.

Karena banyak memakai unsur-unsur grafis untuk membuat efek kaca dan refleksi, tampilan Aero pada Windows Vista dan Windows 7 banyak "memakan" sumberdaya pengolah grafis sehingga berakibat buruk pada daya tahan baterai.

Sebaliknya, tampilan gaya "Metro" pada Windows 8 didesain lebih sederhana dengan bingkai window program yang polos agar perhatian pengguna tidak teralihkan oleh elemen-elemen grafis yang terlalu menarik.

Dalam blognya di blogs.msdn.com, Jensen Harris, Direktur Program Manajemen untuk tim evaluasi Windows 8, mengatakan bahwa tampilan baru tersebut memiliki beberapa tujuan, termasuk mempermudah pengguna dalam memakai komputer dan menghemat baterai ketika digunakan di perangkat portabel.

"Jadi, desktop Windows 8 akan memakai konsep desain Metro. Tetapi kompatibilitas terhadap program-program yang sudah ada tetap dipertahankan karena kami tidak mengubah ukuran bingkai window, kontrol, dan antarmuka sistem," tulis Harris dalam blog-nya.

Versi Release Preview dari Windows 8 dijadwalkan untuk rilis pada bulan Juni mendatang. Di versi ini  pengguna bisa melihat beberapa perubahan tampilan yang direncakan untuk versi final, meski belum seluruhnya.
