Popularitas BlackBerry antara lain didorong oleh penggunaan BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), aplikasi pesan instan yang terkenal dengan keandalannya.

Platform lain pun banyak yang berminat mengadopsi BBM. Sempat tersiar kabar, RIM mau melepas BBM untuk platform seperti Android.

Namun, seperti dikutip dari The Wall Street Journal, CEO RIM Thorsten Heins terindikasi tidak akan melisensi BBM ke platform lain dengan memutuskan bahwa secara umum

Sejak diangkat Januari lalu, CEO RIM Thorsten Heins memfokuskan usaha perusahaan tersebut pada pengembangan perangkat smartphone baru berikut sistem operasi OS BlackBerry 10.

Hal tersebut bertolak belakang dengan keadaan sebelumnya di mana eksekutif senior RIM berusaha  mengkapitalisasi popularitas BBM.

Padahal, BBM adalah produk RIM yang masih sangat populer di seluruh dunia. Data dari RIM menunjukkan bahwa  pengguna BBM bertambah 10 kali lipat sejak Januari 2009 hingga saat ini, dari 5,3 juta menjadi lebih dari 55 juta orang.

Dalam kurun waktu yang sama, pangsa RIM di pasar smartphone Amerika Serikat justru turun drastis dari 50 persen menjadi kurang dari 10 persen, menurut firma penelitian International Data Corporation.

Popularitas BBM seharusnya menjadi alasan di balik pertimbangan RIM untuk melisensi layanan instant messaging tersebut ke platform mobile lain, termasuk Android dan iOS, seperti yang ramai dirumorkan sejak beberapa waktu lalu.

Lisensi ini dipandang sebagian orang sebagai cara untuk menjaga brand recognition yang bisa membuat nama RIM tetap relevan hingga smartphone baru dari perusahaan itu siap diluncurkan.

Kini, seorang sumber dari RIM yang dikutip oleh The Walstreet Journal mengatakan bahwa perihal lisensi tersebut "tidak untuk didiskusikan."

Heins sendiri menolak mengatakan bahwa RIM akan sepenuhnya mengeliminasi kemungkinan lisensi BBM untuk platform lain.

"Jangan pernah mengatakan tidak pada sesuatu karena bisnis ini sangat dinamis. Nanti akan ada waktu di mana (lisensi BBM) ini mungkin menjadi pilihan yang masuk akal," ujar Heins dalam interview dengan situs teknologi Crackberry.com.

Sementara itu, aplikasi layanan pesan instan pihak ketiga seperti WhatsApp memenuhi pasar. Aplikasi-aplikasi ini berusaha membedakan diri dari layanan sejenis yang eksklusif untuk platform tertentu seperti BlackBerry dengan menyediakan varian-varian untuk masing-masing platform.

Untuk saat ini, "Saya bisa mengatakan bahwa BlackBerry Messenger masih tetap nomer satu (dalam segmen layanan pesan instan) karena sudah beredar paling lama," kata analis Gartner, Michael Gartenberg.

"Pertanyaannya adalah apa yang akan dilakukan RIM dengan hal itu dan apakah mereka bisa mempertahankan posisi ketika yang lainnya sudah bisa mengejar?"
